Sultanahmet Mosque (the Blue Mosque)

Sultanahmet Mosque is a later-Ottoman period Mosque located on the historical peninsula of Istanbul. It was built by and named after the Ottoman ruler Sultan Ahmet. It is one of the few imperial mosques with 6 minarets (towers).

In Sultanahmet Mosque, you will see a typical Ottoman mosque, with its peculiar outer architecture and internal ornaments. You can also see the şadırvans (where muslims do ablution before prayer), the garden, and you can watch muslims as they perform their prayers, which they do 5 times daily. It is not possible to go up to the towers (the minarets) for safety reasons. Sultanahmet is located on the historical peninsula, so it is close to the following points of interest: the Basilica Cistern, the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace.

The historical peninsula is a central point in Istanbul. So many public buses, as well as the tram and private taxis can take you there.

Sultanahmet is a mosque, so there is no entrance fee; and it is open every day of week including weekends.

It is open to tourist the whole day, except for the 5 prayer times, which last approximately 30 mins. each. Prayer times change as days become shorter and longer in summer and winter, so it is better to check the most recent times. No fix times can be given.
