Divorce in Turkey: In this era, divorce is seen as a common thing in Turkey. You can acknowledge it when you see the data and that the divorce rates are rising in Turkey. Connected to the modernization processes and exposure of Western values, Turkish family life has changed too. marrying age has increased, gender roles became more egalitarian, and the prevalence of patriarchal extended families declined. Thus, attitudes toward divorce became more tolerant.
How Common is Divorce in Turkey?
According to the research by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) in 2019, people in Turkey become less likely to get married while more likely to get divorced, compared to the previous year. They stated, the number of couples who got married in 2018 versus 2019, shows a decrease of 2.3%. Whereas the number of marriages per thousand population (the crude marriage rate) also shows a down, 0.681% in 2018 to 0.656% in 2019.[1]
The total number of couples who got divorced in 2018 is climbing 8% year-on-year, with 37.6 percent of divorces occurred in the first five years of marriage, and 20.4 percent of divorces occurred in marriages with the duration of 6-10 years. While in 2019, the crude divorce rate was 18.8%.[1]
The Most Common Region For Divorce in Turkey
Izmir (Aegean’s biggest city) becomes the province with the highest crude divorce rate in Turkey. It was followed by the Agean province of Mugla, and the Mediterranean province of Antalya. The southeastern province of Hakkari becomes the lowest crude divorce rate. Followed by two other southeastern provinces: Sirnak and Siirt.
The Factors of Divorce in Turkey
The rise of divorce rates in Turkey has been a continuing trend in recent years. Some marriage difficulties may be the source of the problem. It might range from a miserable existence to irreconcilable marriage disputes to abusive behavior. For the record, Turkish women seeking divorce frequently cite domestic abuse as a primary cause. Women in Turkey have become more aware of their rights as a result of the fact that the majority of them may now obtain higher education.
Divorce is common among people from the upper and middle classes, which both men and women work and earn decent salaries. However, we will see how this thing is seen in the future. Marriages and Divorces Down in Turkey in 2020
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) reported on February 25 that there were fewer marriages and divorces in Turkey in 2020 than in the previous year. The total number of marriages in 2019 was 542,314 individuals. In 2020, it was 487,270, down 10.1 percent from the previous year, according to TUIK’s latest figures on marriage and divorce rates.[2]
The number of divorced couples has decreased by 13.8 percent in a year, according to TUIK. In 2019, the number was 156,587, and in 2020, it was 135,022. In April and May of 2020, there was a substantial drop in weddings due to the pandemic (Covid-19). In April 2020, the number of weddings fell by 68.7% compared to the same month the previous year.[2]
